In the Artist's Words:
"I have been a visual artist for over 40 years. I started as a painter, later making three dimensional work and in the last 25 years using a camera and computer as art making tools. In all mediums, the inner world of the human psyche has held a fascination for me. I work closely with the people in front of the lens. Often the process begins with us telling each other stories about the things that have been important in our lives. Symbols, metaphors and mythic forms arise in these explorations. Mostly the stories arise from personal experiences. We also explore things in the world around us that have a deep resonance for us. After the “scripting” of an image, I set about finding locations, props and costume. The photoshoots are fluid, with hand held camera and little fixed lighting. The process is closer to movie making than stills photography, allowing for a flow through numerous nuanced interpretations.
In this series, dolls, puppets, teddy bears and mannequins allow us to interact with a part of ourselves, our pasts or the wider world through metaphor and symbol. These things are proxies and can make is possible to explore difficult experiences “at arm’s length”, and relate to tender experiences without sentimentality."
